Fishing in the Scottish Borders

To fish the Tweed for sea trout and salmon is pretty easy to do and surprisingly inexpensive – most availability is shown on www.fishtweed.co.uk under the “find fishing” section and river heights and catch records are also shown for the river. If we have a long dry summer your best chances are on the lower beats (shown on the map on the website) and if we get more water focus on the middle river.

The sea trout arrive in early June and are good through to August. Sea trout fishing is particularly good on the Till, for permits call Brian Thompson the fisheries manager at Ford and Etal Estates (Tel: 01668 216223)

For those without equipment Bill at Tweedguide can sort out bookings and also provide equipment with guided tours across the whole river system– 07962 401770

Fishing on the Whiteadder: Salmon and sea trout run from April-September. This year the Berwick and District angling association at Chirnside have gone day permit only. The cost is £30.00 and is available from Gamefair in Berwick. Day permits are also available at Hutton Mills (between £30-£50.00 per day) contact Carl on 07836679125. This river needs water for it to fish well so watch the fishtweed website: if you are lucky enough to be here after rain over the spring and summer months then you have a great chance, if it’s hot and low then stick to picnics and leave the fishing rods in their case (or go to the Tweed or Till!)

It is also possible to fish for trout on the Whiteadder Reservoir, see links for more details.
